Language files without PHP knowledge

There have been repeatedly about if it was possible to create a kinda like language file editor for GeSHi language files and given there are quite some requests – and a bunch of users without the basic PHP knowledge I decided on giving it a try.

The current version of this language wizard script is not yet finished nor anyway near perfect, but should give reasonable results for most users (and should create language files that pass my tests ;-)).

The basic idea behind GeSHis language files is to create an small, easy-to-understand memory structure that is simple to edit and process. Although this is quite well possible with the current language file format, it requires some small knowledge about PHP syntax – which should be covered in the docs though.

So now what’s new with this language file editor? Basically: You only need to know your language you want to create, put some stuff into your browser window and submit a form, before you can Copy&Paste your newly-created language file into a blank file called like given within the text you just copy&pasted. A real ease for people with little to no programming experience.

The script will probably be released with the next stable, but if you are interested in „work-in-progress“ experiences you might visit my local dev server at home. The script will appear in SVN trunk as soon as it has reached necessary functionality 😉

And before anyone complains: The language file editor will have basic functions to get the language file working, i.e. far from enough to use all features of GeSHi 😉 But the highlighting of the output uses, of course, GeSHi ;-P

Flattr this!
